Reflections on a Playback Theatre Performance, by Lynsey Grosfield

“I’m sinking in the quicksand of my thought”

I just completed my first formal activity as an intern for the Montreal Life Stories Project, filming a small-scale “Playback Theatre” event at Concordia University. This was to serve as an introduction to my future work with the Oral History and Performance working group, in which I will be interviewing Montreal artists who utilize their mode of expression to convey their experiences of displacement: either as refugees, immigrants, or survivors of violence or genocide (or possibly all of the above).

Special Playback Theatre Performance in Response to the displacement created by the recent earthquake in Haiti

Our Living Histories Theatre Ensemble has been developing forms of collective storytelling and performance using playback theatre amongst other forms. Playback Theatre is a performative approach to community conversations in which audience members share experiences and witness as their stories are reflected back to them through theatre. Some come to listen and some to tell.

A new life for unique stories

Life Stories Montreal and the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre (MHMC) are pleased to announce that close to 500 Holocaust survivor interviews have recently been digitized.

Since the 1990s, the MHMC has recorded, mostly via VHS support, the life stories of hundreds of Holocaust survivors, as many in English as in French, as in Hebrew and Yiddish. Thanks to collaboration with the Life Stories Montreal project, these interviews have been transferred to a digital format, ensuring their long term conservation as well as a greater accessibility and new possibilities for dissemination.

IN SOLIDARITY WITH HAITI

I know that I speak for everyone in the Life Stories project when I say
that our thoughts are with the Haitian people during this very difficult
time. Haiti has endured so much already. More than anyone should have to.
The City of Montreal has a deep connection to Haiti, as does our project.
The project’s Haitian Working Group is recording the stories of resistance
and loss from the years of the Duvalier dictatorship. In 2009, the project
organized a film festival and exhibit on that paid tribute to those who
paid for their resistance with their freedom or their lives. Each film was

My Bitter-Sweet Radio Experience!

by Afsaneh Hojabri

In her recent blog entry “radio works so far” posted on 12/03/09, Caroline Kunzle provided insightful reflections and raised important points, especially with regards to ethics of representations when it comes to radio production. She made a very important distinction between producing oral history interviews and producing oral history interviews for radio where one has much less control over the final presentation of the story. It is in the light of this valid observation that I would like to reflect on my first and only radio experience.
